Water Of Life MCC History

In the fall of 1970, business owner Russel Cerf was living with his spouse Buzz in Tucson.  Through friends in Los Angeles, he heard about a new church that had formed there, that was mainly an outreach into the gay and lesbian community.  Russel traveled to Los Angeles, attended a worship service at the mother church, MCC LA, and, after the service, met the young dynamic pastor of the church, the Reverend Troy  D. Perry. Russel was given the “go ahead” to plant an MCC church in Tucson.

After putting out flyers in the two gay bars, and renting a meeting room at the Ramada Inn, the first worship service of MCC Tucson was held on December 12, 1970.  We are still in possession of the cross that hung on the wall during that initial service.

During the next few years, MCC Phoenix would aid MCC Tucson in its ministry. The congregation met in various locations including the Tucson Women's Club, the Little Chapel of All Nations, and various congregants’ homes.

In 1974 a young deacon named Michael Nordstrom was assigned as Worship Coordinator of this church and was instrumental in securing a seat on the Tucson Ecumenical Council.  Michael then approached the Unitarian Universalist Church on Twenty Second Street, for a place to hold worship services.  The UCC congregation voted overwhelmingly to go ahead with the invitation.

MCC Tucson's first major public event, the Bicentennial Ball, was held during this summer of 1975 during Tucson’s Bicentennial Celebration.  The Ball was held at the old Tucson Inn Ballroom.
